Irritable Bowel Syndrome ( IBS ) is a functional bowel disorder with no
organic pathology where symptoms are caused by changes in how the GI tract
works.Population-based studies estimate the prevalence of IBS at 10-20% .The
cause of IBS is unknown. The risk of developing IBS increases sixfold after
acute gastrointestinal infection. Psychological factors are considered important
in the etiology of IBS.
Diarrohea or constipation may predominate , or they may alternate. There are
distinct aberrations in small and large bowel motility. Patient presents with
Abdominal pain ,discomfort ,bloating and altered bowel habits in the absence of
specific and unique organic pathology. In most of the people symptoms develop before the age of 35 years.All routine investigations are within normal range . Delayed colonic motility may be more common in patients with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome than in healthy controls. Similarly, accelerated colonic transit may be more common in patients with diarrhea-predominant disease.
IBS does not increase the mortality , has no effect on life expectancy or the risk of inflammatory bowel disease or cancer. Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments that attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological support . Patient education remains the cornerstone of successful treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. The patient must acknowledge stressors to develop avoidance technique.
